Château Haut‑Bages Libéral traces its name to the Liberal family, 18th‑century wine brokers who built the estate’s reputation while assembling some of Pauillac’s finest vineyard parcels—now uniquely positioned between Château Latour and Château Pichon Baron on the high “Bages” plateau. Classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855, the property was revitalized first by the Cruse family in the 1960s through major replanting, and then fully reborn under the Villars family from 1983 onward. Today, under Claire Villars‑Lurton, the estate combines modernized winemaking with a strong commitment to sustainable viticulture, producing wines that honor its historic terroir with renewed energy and precision.
The great wine Château Haut-Bages Libéral combines energy with refinement. A true "Pauillac in lace". The presence of limestone in the vineyard brings a touch of freshness and minerality to the style of the wine, making it unique within the Pauillac appellation.
The wine has a beautiful balance, velvety tannins, and an unctuous body. The 2021 contains more Cabernet Sauvignon than ever before, and this gives it a powerful, expressive style with cedar and aromatic spices alongside a core of blackcurrant, red plum, and a floral lift. It is brilliant, powerful, elegant, and vibrant. A lot of minerality and salinity and long and ripe tannins. There's structure here with a grippy finish that will soften with time.
Blend: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot
