The Deaver Vineyard is one of the original Zinfandel plantings in Amador County, and these vines have served as parent cuttings for many vineyards in the region. This vintage comes from a 20-acre, shallow, rocky lot of 135-year-old vines. These soils challenge the vines to grow deeper to pull nutrients from multiple soil layers. The result is lower yields, but fruit that is highly concentrated and complex.
With age comes grace, and these old vines do not grow as wildly as new-vine Zinfandel. Winemakers with old-vine Zinfandel experience know to employ careful selection of yeast strains and gentle pump over techniques to fully bring out the flavor and character of these rare grapes.
Deaver Vineyard is known for being a powerful wine with extended ageability. Inky, deep garnet in color, it offers aromas of violet, black cherry, raspberry and a spice box of clove, anise and cracked black pepper. On the palate the wine is generous, with a mouth-filling entry, a midpalate of black licorice, chewy tannins and a long floral and mineral finish.
